Soul light for the Dark Night: Healing for the Spiritual Wounds of Trauma, Abuse and Addiction

3.0 credit seminar. This is an Intermediate Level Course (for those with experience in the field of counseling, life coaching, pastoral care, trauma therapy, social work or education) or Advanced (for those with extensive experience in this field)

• Pastors, ministers, lay helpers and professionals, are you well-versed in the cycles of abuse, trauma, and addiction?

• Would you like to learn how to integrate the element of spirituality into your trauma and/or addictions work or the element of trauma-recovery into your work with the spiritually broken?

This presentation, drawn from the presenters’ personal and clinical experience, will demonstrate to participants the psychological and spiritual damage caused by trauma, abuse, and addiction. This month, we focus our Elements of Wellness series on the element of Spirituality. We aim to discuss ways you can bring this element into your sessions, engaging more ways to help abuse survivors to heal.

All abuse, all trauma, is an assault on the human spirit. Addiction is an assault on the spirit as well. All survivors of abuse and trauma, and all trapped in the throes of addiction, suffer not only psychological damage, but soul damage as well. In addition, survivors of abuse, addicts, offenders and their partners are all caught in a vicious and tragic cycle of abuse, betrayal and addiction which can only be fully broken if the spiritual wounds are addressed and spiritual healing is supported by mental health and pastoral professionals knowledgeable of the psychological and spiritual issues involved. 

Course Objectives:

1) Participants will be able to identify the psychological and spiritual damage caused by trauma, abuse and addiction. 

2) Participants will be able to recognize and assess the spiritual needs of those caught in the cycle of abuse and addiction. 

3) Participants will develop psychological and spiritual tools to aid in the healing and recovery of their clients in various clinical and pastoral settings.

4) Participants will acquire an increased awareness of the spiritually corrosive power of anxiety and toxic shame for both survivors and addicts and learn how to aid in its healing. 

5) Participants will learn a structured process called The Five Pathways for accessing the spiritual resilience of their clients and leading them to freedom from the spiritual wounds caused by trauma, abuse and addiction.

Presenters: 

Patrick Fleming is a CSAT supervisor and psychotherapist practicing in St. Louis, MO. He also has a Master of Divinity degree and years of pastoral experience as a hospital chaplain and spiritual coach. His work has focused on integrating spirituality into psychological counseling with both sexual addicts and survivors of childhood abuse and trauma. In recent years, this has included treatment of clerical sexual offenders and abusers. Patrick is the principal co-author of three books: Shattered Soul? Five Pathways to Healing the Spirit after Abuse and Trauma(WordStream Publishing, 2011) and Broken Trust: Stories of Pain, Hope, and Healing from Clerical Abuse Survivors and Abusers(Crossroad Publishing, 2007), and the soon to be released, Soul Light for the Dark Night: Daily Meditations of Healing from Trauma and Abuse(Gentle Path Press, 2018). 

Sue Lauber-Fleming is a psychotherapist and personal coach in St. Louis, MO. She is also a psychiatric nurse, and has had extensive pastoral experience as a hospital chaplain and chaplain supervisor. She has been a consultant to several religious organizations in the St. Louis region. In her counseling work, Sue has centered on the psychological and spiritual healing process of women survivors of abuse of all kinds, especially those who are victims of clerical sexual abuse. Sue has co-authored Soul Light for the Dark Night,Shattered Soul?and Broken Trust,in which she has told her own story of emotional and spiritual healing from childhood, clerical sexual abuse. With her husband Patrick, Sue is a co-founder of Double Rainbow Counseling, Coaching, and Consulting dedicated to integrating healthy spirituality into the psychological healing processes of counseling and recovery.
